By the time your child joins Reception Class, they are likely to be able to recognise most letters and read a few basic words. The next few years in Key Stage 1 are for building up their basic knowledge of letters and sounds, to a point where they can read books with confidence and for enjoyment. Understanding content is as important as being able to read it. Check your child’s understanding of stories when you read to them and when they read to you. Ask them to tell you their favourite part of the story; what happened at the end; who were the main people/characters in the story etc.
