The next few years in Key Stage 1 are for building up their basic knowledge of letters and sounds, to a point where they can read books with confidence and for enjoyment. Understanding content is as important as being able to read it. Check your child’s understanding of stories when you read to them and when they read to you. Ask them to tell you their favourite part of the story; what happened at the end; who were the main people/characters in the story etc.
